Marmoleum Installation in Seattle

Marmoleum is a beautiful floor, but only if it's installed well. Its smooth surface shows every flaw in the floor underneath, and its seams take real skill to get right. Interior Floor Designs has specialized in Marmoleum for decades. Our lead installer has more than 20 years of Marmoleum experience, and our team has over 50 years of installation experience combined. We install Marmoleum in homes and businesses throughout King, Snohomish and Skagit counties.

What Is Marmoleum?

Marmoleum is Forbo's brand of true linoleum. It's made mainly from natural, renewable materials such as linseed oil, wood flour, limestone and pine rosin, pressed onto a jute backing. It's not vinyl. It's durable and warm underfoot, it comes in hundreds of colors, and it can be cut into custom patterns and inlays. That's why it's a favorite for kitchens, bathrooms, mudrooms, kids' rooms, and commercial spaces like schools and clinics.

Marmoleum Formats We Install

  • Marmoleum Sheet. Seamless-looking coverage for kitchens, baths and large rooms. This is the format for custom inlays, borders and multi-color designs.

  • Marmoleum Click (Cinch Loc). Floating planks and squares that snap together. They're a good choice over existing subfloors, and nothing is glued down.

  • Marmoleum Modular. Glue-down tiles and planks in modern sizes. They work well for patterns and for commercial spaces.

  • Marmoleum Composition Tile (MCT). A classic tile format for checkerboards and bold layouts, like a retro kitchen or a playroom.

Custom Inlays and Patterns

  • We can cut Marmoleum into logos, borders, stripes and one-of-a-kind designs. That could be a medallion at an entry, a color-block kitchen, or a floor pattern that shows kids where to walk in a school hallway. Why Installation Matters So Much with Marmoleum

  • We prepare the subfloor properly. Over wood, we install at least ¼" underlayment-grade plywood. We never use CDX, OSB, MDF or luan. Over concrete, we test the moisture and pH first, and we level the surface when it needs it. [link to Floor Leveling page]

  • We never install over old flooring. Any movement in the floor underneath will eventually show through or cause the new floor to fail.

  • We fit seams tightly. In homes we use the underscribe method, which fits the sheets precisely on site so the seam is just a fine line. We save heat welding for commercial spaces that need a watertight seam. Be careful of any installer who insists on heat welding in a home.

  • We account for how the material moves. Marmoleum sheet can shrink in length and grow in width when it's set in wet adhesive. We plan the layout and seam direction around that.
